My Morning

By 9:00 a.m. today, Demon Baby and I had been to The Dollar Store and the grocery store. These trips, alone, I could have done in a combined total of 45 minutes. Tops. Including driving there and back. Instead, it took an hour and a half because Demon Baby no longer likes to ride in the cart and instead prefers to HELP me push the cart, and since I value the lives of innocent grocery store workers, and senior citizens shopping who can't move quickly out of the way, I must wrestle with him and the cart to keep it from careening wildly and causing a disaster. In addition, I answered 987 questions from Demon Baby, 986 of which began with WHY?

WHY did a bird poop on our car?
WHY did someone leave a penny on the ground?
WHY does our cart have a wobbly wheel?
WHY doesn't the grocery man FIX the broken wheel?
WHY do you look tired, Mommy?
WHY can't I have this candy?
WHY? WHY? WHY?

Is it any wonder by 9:00 a.m. I'm ready for a nap? But trust me, he isn't.

That stage cracks me up, particularly when I'm not the mom and I don't have the questions 22 hours a day. :-)

One of my boys is in the WHY stage. I really try to answer his questions, but I inevitably end up just saying "I don't know" or "Just because". We should get DB and my guys together and let them wear each other out!

I know. The only time he is semi-good is when he has a playmate, and then he's largely conflict-free and very happy. His girlfriend (aka his 4 year old cousin) is coming for a week, along with my cousin, her husband, and their other baby--age 1. While it might sound like insanity, I can't wait because I am certain he will be an angel the whole time.

lol ...i did the same at his age... growing up in sweden, where i ran into all kinds of folk on the winter sidewalk with my 'kick sled'... when asked why, i said: they were in MY way! :O

I think the answer "I don't know" often satisfies them just as much as any other. All they are wanting to do is communicate and hear you respond. We are the ones who think we should give a well-reasoned out answer so that they can learn something.

I read your blog and I became so tired just thinking about all those questions that I was forced to take a 2 hour nap.

Strangely, it doesn't sound like insanity! Sometimes I'm at my most calm at birthday parties surrounded by a dozen or more screaming kids! They're all happy and well behaved though so it's really not so stressful.

Suzanne, I'm so happy to see your respone. I DO feel compelled to come up with some real answer because at this age they're really exploring their world and really want to know. It's nice to hear that they may just be trying to make conversation and I can quit trying to make my brain work overtime!

He's pretty insistent with the "But WHY!!" and I guess the way my mind works, I just want to hand him an answer, so we'll see. Maybe I will try a few "just because" replies.

I know. If you can "let go" of the house getting messy, kids really do entertain each other.
