Lullaby

Two nights ago, I rocked Demon Baby to almost-sleep. This is one of my favorite things to do, because for a few minutes, he is STILL and quiet, and his eyes have that glazed, sleepy look, and he is . . . angelic.

I was singing, "Rock-a-Bye, Baby." He looked up at me and whispered lovingly, "I remember when I was a baby and you sang me that."

Which was sooooo cute, so I immediately said, full of those motherly warm-fuzzies, "I'll sing you another song." I wracked my brain . . . "Hmm, what did I used to sing to you when you were a tiny baby." My usual lullaby repertoire is actually "Amazing Grace" or "You Are My Sunshine." So I trotted out the latter.

"No," he said sleepily.

"Well, I'll take requests. What do you want to hear?"

"Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine."

I am NOT kidding. Oh, how I wish I was.

In case you are NOT into Rage Against the Machine, here's a sample of the lyrics:

Terror rains drenchin',
quenchin' tha thirst of
Tha power dons
That five sided fist-a-gon
Tha rotten sore
on the face of mother earth gets
Bigger
Tha triggers cold empty ya purse
They rally round tha family
With pockets full of shells

I blame this on the fact that he plays Guitar Hero III with 18-year-old Oldest Sister.

"I don't know that lullaby."

"You know the song!" he protests.

In fact, I do. It is on my iPod.

"But I don't have it memorized."

"What about Ballroom Blitz?"

"Don't know it."

"How about The Clash, 'Should I Stay or Should I Go'?"

"Much as I am a fan of the late Joe Strummer, I will take a pass on that as a lullaby."

"How about Slow Ride by Foghat."

(And I insist to you, I am NOT making this conversation up. He's REALLY articulate. And really REALLY knows his music. Swear!)

"I know that one." And so, I did an interpretation of Foghat as a lullaby.

Which certainly beat Rage Against the Machine.

And all this is sure proof he is, indeed, a Demon Baby.

LOVE Guitar Hero!!!

And this kid is Wacky Times Infinity. Just today his dad looked at him and said, "I hate to say it because he's so little, but the kid inherited your eccentric gene. He's doomed." At the time, Demon Baby was naked (AGAIN) and dancing to Rage Against the Machine, while unraveling an entire roll of toilet paper.

Gotta love him.

You need to write a book and make Demon Baby the central character.

I have a few ideas. :-)

My biggest problem is I can't decide whether to write it as a YA or an adult novel.

Sounds like a Demon Baby book might be better suited for mature audiences LOL! I love that he loves to be naked. My boys would go naked all the time if they could. They shed clothes right after they eat and won't let me put their pajamas on. They keep saying they want to be naked a little bit longer!

That is hilarious. The way he sounds, better make it an adult novel.

This reminds me of my son who woke up one night when I was watching the very stupid "Starsky and Hutch" movie & I didn't turn it off. The next weekend my dad was in town and the little guy (about 3 yrs old) told him "You ain't nothing but a two bit drug dealer." It was quite funny.

That's hilarious. You can read old posts on this blog. My Demon's favorite word is CRAP.

Okay, that clinches it. I'm putting my money on 'rock star.'

ROFLMAO.

Yes, I think we're going in that direction.

And the kid has amazing rhythm.

Sounds like yours and mine are a match made in heaven! My little one knows music too. Of course mom and dad are music people, and that helps. However, mine will not under any circumstances let me sing her to sleep. She gets that from the terrible teen in the house who thinks I can't sing. (I don't know if she can hear herself when she belts out a tune.)

Love your blog, I shall return! Thanks for visiting mine.

Hi Muse:
My kids are aged 18, 12, 10, and 3. The 18 year old is a violinist with "perfect" pitch. Thus the fact that I am tone deaf drives her nuts. I am forbade to sing. I do anyway.

Metal head! A kid after my own heart. LOL Although, the lullaby factor of his choices, not so much.

From Tech at Demon age: 'Sing me the one by that shrieky lady with a voice like yours and my name in it.'

Ah, this would be Janis Joplin's Booby McGee (which you alone know can be slanted to be close enough to Techs actually name ;-)

p.s. I DO NOT sing shrieky

LAINEY!!!!!!!

Love that!!!

And I love Janis. Perhaps I can swing him over to that . . . versus Rage Against the Machine.

But if he asks me to start rapping, I'm out of my element.

If only he could use his powers for good.

I think the Demon baby book should be for any woman who's thinking of procreating. lol

I want six kids. I have four. I told my best friend last night that he is birth control as surely as if he went in and snipped my tubes himself.

I do think I will adopt . . . but I will wait until he's a little older. He's just all the little kid I can handle right now.

And frankly, I think he should be REQUIRED babysitting for ALL high school couples. Spend a half-day with Demon Baby and THEN see if you want to have sex so much.

I love RATM.

My kids only listen to real music, never disney--mostly punk rock. Ask my son what his favorite bands are he'll say Linkin Park, Green Day, Rise Against, Sum 41, Offspring...

All highly inappropriate, according to some sources. Oh well. What can I say, he's got great taste in tunes? And those ones who are so tough to parent are the ones who make superb adults. (Just ask my mom. No, not about me, but about my middle brother...)

I am comforted by that thought. He marches to his own drummer.

As for music taste . . . my oldest is a classical violinist whose modern music tastes are very alternative, so we have some AWESOME music around here all the time.
